R&D Trends

BOF steelmaking shops are seeking to modify operating practices to increase scrap usage. Combined blowing will also be more widely adopted. Granulated coal injection is being developed that can permit 40-60% scrap in the charge. In the future, dynamic process control and slag-free tapping will also be more widely adopted. Long term R&D is also being conducted in the development of one-step steelmaking that combines the current batch operations of coke-making, blast furnace ironmaking, and conventional steelmaking.
