The total supply of aluminum was 8,966 thousand metric tons in 1993. The additional source of aluminum was made up mainly of imports (59% increase from 1992) and second recovery (6.8% increase from 1992). The drastic increase in imports is a sign of the cheap aluminum being exported from the republics of the former Soviet Union which, at one point, was less expensive than U.S. produced scrap. |
