Founded in 1895, Peoples Gas originally operated under the parent company of Lykes Energy. In June of 1997, Peoples Gas merged with TECO Energy, a $2 billion company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. During that same month, TECO Energy also acquired West Florida Natural Gas, a company with 30,000 customers in key parts of the Florida Panhandle and Central Florida.

Since then, TECO Peoples Gas has experienced expansions into Southwest Florida (including Naples and Fort Myers), Jacksonville, and Martin and Broward counties.
